Justice Isn't About Just Us

Despite having recently completed or engaged in ongoing contentious contract negotiations, two labor organizations from either end of Ohio endorsed the Ohio Healthy Families Act this past week.

United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1099 in Southwestern Ohio recognized this initiated statute as a reasonable measure to afford all working Ohioans with a measure of economic justice. Nearly half of all working Ohioans risk loss of income or employment when they choose to care for themselves or a family member during illness.

Likewise members of UAW Local 1005 in Parma, Ohio near Cleveland realize that not all workers have negotiated paid sick days. Their concern for those less fortunate lies at the heart of what it means to "be union".

The broad coalition that is the Ohioans For Healthy Families includes members of faith, business and labor communities that exemplify the call to serve the common good. Recent studies show the positive economic impact of OHFA on Ohio's economy as well as increased access to healthcare for all persons. Why wouldn't everyone be for The Ohio Healthy Families Act?

This is unbelievable. Why not 14 days, why not a month? How does one propose to "earn" sick days? By just showing up and doing their job that they are getting paid to perform? So does this apply to McDonald's employees? Minimum wage employees? Just simply unbelievable and is another form of business TAX that is just driving more businesses out of the state of Ohio. This will ensure my business will move out of this NON-BUSINESS friendly state. Let all the unions and "pro employee" activists continue to promote these foolish policies and there will be no small businesses left in this state.
