Movers and shakers of Cincinnati gathered together August 28th at the Cincinnati Interfaith Worker's Center in Over-the-Rhine. Don Sherman, Executive Director of the Center, welcomed a diverse group of faith and labor activists to the Ohioans for Healthy Families Regional Speakers Bureau and also spoke about the Day Labor Organizing Project in Cincinnati.
During the meeting, a mother who lacked earned paid sick days at work detailed the ordeal she went through while her son was having an organ transplant. She spoke passionately about the importance of earning paid sick days as an issue of basic fairness for families. Today, too many Ohioans must make the gut-wrenching choice between caring for a sick child or collecting a paycheck.
The event was a success. Everyone left the room with a powerful reminder of how this issue affects middle-class families, and how reasonable it is to allow employees to earn paid sick days.
